A pitched roof has sloping surfaces at an angle of more than 20 degrees. On the other hand, a pitched roof may refer to two slopes of a roof meting at a central ridge. Generally, pitch refers to the vertical raise of a roof to the horizontal extension. A pitched roof is regarded as an effective and reliable way of making a building weather proof. Nowadays, pitched roofs are constructed using pre-fabricated frames known as trusses/rafters. The trusses/rafters are designed and manufactured according to the precise loading requirements of a building. The loading requirements take into consideration the roof pitch, span and the weight of the slates and tiles to be used. Trussed roofs are not suitable for conversion since changing/removing any component would out rightly weaken the whole structure. This is unlike the traditional roofs where much of the roof’s load was centered on the purlins. There are several pitched roof styles including gabled, hipped and mansard pitch roofs.

Factors to consider for pitched roofing,

PITCHED Roof

The greater the roof’s pitch, the more costly and difficult the roofing work is. Due to the added regulations and safety hazards, if the roof is too steep to access or stand on, then ensure that you hire a licensed contractor for the roofing job. This is mainly because such a contractor is bound to have the necessary equipment and specialized knowledge to provide workers with the necessary protection against falls. In order to ensure that federal guidelines are not violated and that the employees are well protected, it is vital that the contractor understands and uses fall arrest systems, guard rails, and safety nets that help prevent serious injuries.

Pitched Roof Replacement

The slope of pitched roofs makes them more difficult to work on during maintenance. Despite their good drainage, pitched roofs require regular inspection and frequent maintenance. On the other hand, failure to often inspect drains and gutters may leave them to be clogged and therefore, they will be damaged quicker.

Flat Roof

The pitch you select plays a vital role in determining the roofing material for your roof. For example, shingle roofing is unfit for low-pitched roofs where moisture can easily accumulate. On the other hand, a steep-pitched roof is unsuitable for most roofing products that are single-ply. Asphalt shingles may be best suited for steep-pitched roofs.

Pitched roofs are a bit expensive as compared to flat roofs. However, this may not make up for the subsequent long-term benefits in terms of costs incurred during maintenance. Due to their reduced susceptibility to moisture, pitched roofs are best suited for wet climates.

Over the years, homeowners have taken the advantage of the extra space provided by pitched roofs to increase the living space. Most commonly, the attic space is converted into extra bedrooms. All these factors play important roles in determining the type of roof you settle for. Therefore, it is vital to know the facts surrounding the decision you make. Your choice should not only fit your budget but also all your needs and preferences if possible since style is bound to have an influence on the decision you make. It would help to have a professional contractor advise you on the type and style of roof you settle for.

If your roof only leaks during winter months, I doubt anything wrong with it.

After a full inspection of the attic insulation, assessed significance of the intake Soffit as well as the exhaust roof ventilation, we have determined that roof shingles are in good working order.

Having heat loss due to poor Insulation dept in the attic in most cases why the roof seems to leak. Before spending thousands on a new roof, have a professional evaluation to identify permanent solutions.

Also having poor ventilation in the attic is another no brainer. Stop spending thousands and address the source of all the problems. Bandaid can only last for a short period of time.

Flat roofs may or may not have ventilation. Commercial applications have no attic space and insulation is right under the roofing membrane. As long as 2.5 inch insulation with vapor barrier is valid, type of membrane can be modified Bitumen, epdm or tar/gravel. Residential flat roofs do have a small crawl space for the Insulation.

There is a big difference estimating a roof by looking at it from the street or actually getting up on the roof and measuring the sq footage and the details. Getting up on the roof and measuring is called “a quote”. A quote is more preferred for you because it is accurate measurements instead of eye balling. Eye balling is an estimate where the price may change without a notice because contractor sold himself short and needs to hustle the customer.

Always request 3 roofing quotes when it comes to replacing your Ottawa home, office or commercial building from few local roofing companies. Cheap does not mean good, expensive doesn’t mean good either. The entire concept of getting 3 quotes is to identify the price difference between all and types of material being offered.

Material being used in the current roofing industry are very similar and only thing that really needs to be looked at is the amount of “ice and water shield”, maximum roof vents and the felt paper. Ice and water shield must be applied at least 6 feet from the eavestroughs and the rest of the roof needs to be covered by #15 felt paper or higher grade. Installing ice and water shield and the felt paper must be done by hand. 1 1/4 hand nails are my preference when it comes to hand banging. If there are any valleys, ice and water shield must be installed under neat the metal valley prior the metal valley itself. Valleys are known for ice damming and that’s why we use ice and water shield. A roofing gun can be used to install the shingles only as long as proper dept is set on every gun that is being used on that specific roof.

These are the most important details to look for when it comes to replacing a shingle roof in Ottawa Ontario. We offer free roofing quotes and estimates in Ottawa for residential pitched roofing, residential flat roofing, commercial shingle roofing and commercial flat roofing sales, installations, repairs and services.ImageImageImage

Many people who rely on the best companies when installing roofing membranes or replace the roof of their houses. There are a variety of advantages that flat roofs can give your home.

A slanted roof is very difficult to clean and most of the time you will need to call a professional to do the job. It is very risky to climb on a pitched roof, and your only option is to call a maintenance company. Flat roofs are easy to clean and also have a coating that helps the water flow over the surface.

A flat roof helps homeowners reduce energy use, especially in summer. These facilitate cooling ceilings of the house, particularly if it has been coated roofing membranes reflective material that allows heat from the sun increases the temperature inside the house.

Currently growing homeowners are installing flat roofs and covered with roofing membranes or looking houses with roofs such as it is quite cheap compared to install angled ceilings. A smaller amount of material is used and labor costs are also reduced drastically

Read the entry here published on waterproofing of horizontal surfaces , flat roofs and terraces passable. The flat roof is characteristic of the modern house . Although there are modern chalet style houses with sloping roofs, the change in architecture leading to flat roofs and its use was effective as modern house design and modern buildings in the twentieth century.

Actually, a flat roof is not strictly horizontal: if not, the water will not slip out. They are named for the average slope of a flat roof (between 1 and 3 inches per foot of horizontal development) is significantly lower than that of a tiled roof: it can range from 0.30 meters to at least one meter Ceiling horizontal development. It is therefore more likely to heavy rain water from collecting in a ceiling more than one inclined plane. And so, the chances of leaks. Especially if the ceiling is not well resolved encounters with wall’s insulation (babetas calls). Or if they were not well constructed seams or vents in the funnels through which the water will drain.

If it snows, the choice is one: in these cases the sloped ceiling is imposed. Even if possible, it is desirable that the ceiling as simple as possible. This prevents the breaks-called valleys, and hip lines-which are the weak points of a sloping roof.

Since the last wind storm i had customers complain about other roofing companies who wants to charge 250$ for sending a service truck to an address and to perform simple roof repairs at homeowners cost. So 250$ for the service call plus material and labor???

Would you agree to pay a roofing company 450$ to remove 3 taps and install 3 new taps of shingles to your roof? I don’t know if you are second generation rich person but paying 450$ for that is sounds like robbery to me. We offer free estimates all around town and when we do price out a job we asses the difficulty of it and amount of material is needed to complete it. I have done repairs for as low as 60$ if its only one or two taps and it’s easy to get to. Time to wake up people. Also many people are getting fooled with the cost of the roof repairs and actually making a claim to their insurance company. This is the type of trap some companies wants to get you in to. Always shop around and get up to 3 estimates for your roof repairs or roof replacements. Compare all the differences and make a decision from there.

That is a question every home or business owner should ask themselves. Calculating the cost of the repairs and estimated replacement costs  should be compared before more roof repairs needed.

Once the roof is all dried up and has no strength to fight back against the mother nature is a good time to replace that old roof. Roof shingles need tlc and preventive roof maintenance to make it through the hot summers and harsh winter in Ottawa, Ontario. There are many factors are involved when it comes to performance of your roof. For example; ventilation, sufficient air flow, gutter maintenance, roof snow and ice removal and also underlayment. Not having proper ventilation can speed up the aging process for your roof shingles. As well as blocked soffit or no soffit.
Number one reason for ice damming is caused by poor or no ventilation in your attic. Also having all the gutter full of leaves and blocking the water flow. Eventually it freezes and starts up ice build up along the metal valleys.

Exterior caulking that is used on your roof can be good up to 5 to 10 years depending on the positioning of your house. South facing section of your roof will be damaged before any other side. Also roof leaks are common during thaw on the north facing section of the house. Hiring a insured roofing contractor to inspect your roof can may cost you hundred or two but water damage can and will cost you thousands of dollars.

To increase the performance of your roof, you should clean the gutter before and after the winter, have your roof inspected and caulked every 4 to 5 years, remove any major snow build up from your roof to eliminate structural damage, remove snow from north facing section of the house to eliminate water damage.

If you take your car to get the oil changed every 5000 kms you should take all the necessary steps to protect your roof also. After all you can not live in your car can you?

40 years old plywood needs replacement

Winter in Ottawa Ontario can be different every year. Because there is always freezing rain in the forecast for the capital, there will be layers of snow and ice build up on your roof. It can cause structural damage because of the weight.

There are many reasons for ice damming other than freezing rain like poor ventilation, heat loss, blocked soffit or even having a low-pitched roof. It the slope of the roof is 6/12 or less, ice and water shield must be installed under neat and both sides of  the valleys. On a 4/12 pitched roof i would recommend 9 feet of ice and water shield. If your house is facing north and south than your north side is more at risk of water damage before the south side. If you ask why; south-facing side of the house always kept warm by the sun and snow will always melt before. But the north side of the house does not see as much sun and melting occurs gradually not like the south side. Melting snow will pool up and back right under the shingles. Removing all the snow and ice from the north side of your house is a must unless there is enough ice and water shield and felt is installed.

Eventually heavy snow that’s parked on your roof will bow the plywood and you can see the rows of trusses from the street. It doesn’t matter if your house or your roof is new. Your roof is not design to haul weight for months, its design to allow rain or snow to run down and keep your house dry.
