The answer is, Yes. Poorly designed Eavestroughing systems can be the reason for the ice damming. Properly designed Eavestroughing will flow equal amounts of water from every corner of the house. Faster the water exists the roof, less ice there will be. Downspouts should be installed every 25 feet. Anything longer than 25 feet will […]

It is almost that time of year to take a better look at the amount of snow that is parked on your roof before more weight is added or the sudden thaw.

Ice dams are more likely to cause a roof leak when it’s compared to snow

Ice dams are common problem when it comes to leaky roofs this time of year. It is highly recommended to remove all the ice dams prior to thaw to avoid roof leaks or damage to your home, office or estate.

There is a big difference estimating a roof by looking at it from the street or actually getting up on the roof and measuring the sq footage and the details. Getting up on the roof and measuring is called “a quote”. A quote is more preferred for you because it is accurate measurements instead of eye balling. Eye balling is an estimate where the price may change without a notice because contractor sold himself short and needs to hustle the customer.

Always request 3 roofing quotes when it comes to replacing your Ottawa home, office or commercial building from few local roofing companies. Cheap does not mean good, expensive doesn’t mean good either. The entire concept of getting 3 quotes is to identify the price difference between all and types of material being offered.

Material being used in the current roofing industry are very similar and only thing that really needs to be looked at is the amount of “ice and water shield”, maximum roof vents and the felt paper. Ice and water shield must be applied at least 6 feet from the eavestroughs and the rest of the roof needs to be covered by #15 felt paper or higher grade. Installing ice and water shield and the felt paper must be done by hand. 1 1/4 hand nails are my preference when it comes to hand banging. If there are any valleys, ice and water shield must be installed under neat the metal valley prior the metal valley itself. Valleys are known for ice damming and that’s why we use ice and water shield. A roofing gun can be used to install the shingles only as long as proper dept is set on every gun that is being used on that specific roof.

These are the most important details to look for when it comes to replacing a shingle roof in Ottawa Ontario. We offer free roofing quotes and estimates in Ottawa for residential pitched roofing, residential flat roofing, commercial shingle roofing and commercial flat roofing sales, installations, repairs and services.ImageImageImage

Winter in Ottawa Ontario can be different every year. Because there is always freezing rain in the forecast for the capital, there will be layers of snow and ice build up on your roof. It can cause structural damage because of the weight.

There are many reasons for ice damming other than freezing rain like poor ventilation, heat loss, blocked soffit or even having a low-pitched roof. It the slope of the roof is 6/12 or less, ice and water shield must be installed under neat and both sides of  the valleys. On a 4/12 pitched roof i would recommend 9 feet of ice and water shield. If your house is facing north and south than your north side is more at risk of water damage before the south side. If you ask why; south-facing side of the house always kept warm by the sun and snow will always melt before. But the north side of the house does not see as much sun and melting occurs gradually not like the south side. Melting snow will pool up and back right under the shingles. Removing all the snow and ice from the north side of your house is a must unless there is enough ice and water shield and felt is installed.

Eventually heavy snow that’s parked on your roof will bow the plywood and you can see the rows of trusses from the street. It doesn’t matter if your house or your roof is new. Your roof is not design to haul weight for months, its design to allow rain or snow to run down and keep your house dry.

You may think that the seals are bad between the double panes in your window but the real question is what is the cause for it? During cold winter months your furnace is working overtime to keep your house in a reasonable temperatures live in. Insulation behind the drywall and in your attic supposed to keep you warm from cold winter months. When there is no fresh air flow in your attic due to improper ventilation system, it forces all the warm air to get trapped and cause condensation .
Many may think skylight is in bad shape and needs to be replaced but it may only leak because of the ice dams that are allowing water to enter around the skylight and cause a leak.
It’s like taking a shower with hot water and getting all the mirrors moist. As soon as you turn on the fan all the moist air fans out and circulates the air.
So on your roof there are vents designed to fan out the trapped moist air. If these vents are blocked because of the snow or they are not big enough to fan out the moist air, it will cause condensation. If you are experiencing similar effects and want some answers, contact your local roofing contractor for advise. If roof vents are not visible and covered with snow, hire an experienced roofer in your area to remove all the snow off your roof.
Be sure to ask for proof of insurance.
