A pitched roof has sloping surfaces at an angle of more than 20 degrees. On the other hand, a pitched roof may refer to two slopes of a roof meting at a central ridge. Generally, pitch refers to the vertical raise of a roof to the horizontal extension. A pitched roof is regarded as an effective and reliable way of making a building weather proof. Nowadays, pitched roofs are constructed using pre-fabricated frames known as trusses/rafters. The trusses/rafters are designed and manufactured according to the precise loading requirements of a building. The loading requirements take into consideration the roof pitch, span and the weight of the slates and tiles to be used. Trussed roofs are not suitable for conversion since changing/removing any component would out rightly weaken the whole structure. This is unlike the traditional roofs where much of the roof’s load was centered on the purlins. There are several pitched roof styles including gabled, hipped and mansard pitch roofs.

Factors to consider for pitched roofing,

PITCHED Roof

The greater the roof’s pitch, the more costly and difficult the roofing work is. Due to the added regulations and safety hazards, if the roof is too steep to access or stand on, then ensure that you hire a licensed contractor for the roofing job. This is mainly because such a contractor is bound to have the necessary equipment and specialized knowledge to provide workers with the necessary protection against falls. In order to ensure that federal guidelines are not violated and that the employees are well protected, it is vital that the contractor understands and uses fall arrest systems, guard rails, and safety nets that help prevent serious injuries.

Pitched Roof Replacement

The slope of pitched roofs makes them more difficult to work on during maintenance. Despite their good drainage, pitched roofs require regular inspection and frequent maintenance. On the other hand, failure to often inspect drains and gutters may leave them to be clogged and therefore, they will be damaged quicker.

Flat Roof

The pitch you select plays a vital role in determining the roofing material for your roof. For example, shingle roofing is unfit for low-pitched roofs where moisture can easily accumulate. On the other hand, a steep-pitched roof is unsuitable for most roofing products that are single-ply. Asphalt shingles may be best suited for steep-pitched roofs.

Pitched roofs are a bit expensive as compared to flat roofs. However, this may not make up for the subsequent long-term benefits in terms of costs incurred during maintenance. Due to their reduced susceptibility to moisture, pitched roofs are best suited for wet climates.

Over the years, homeowners have taken the advantage of the extra space provided by pitched roofs to increase the living space. Most commonly, the attic space is converted into extra bedrooms. All these factors play important roles in determining the type of roof you settle for. Therefore, it is vital to know the facts surrounding the decision you make. Your choice should not only fit your budget but also all your needs and preferences if possible since style is bound to have an influence on the decision you make. It would help to have a professional contractor advise you on the type and style of roof you settle for.

Orleans is a fast growing region in the Ottawa Ontario Metropolitan. Residential sector has exploded over the past 20 years with volume builders slapping them together like cheeseburgers. Inspect your home all around regularly to identify potential problems and let us know if you are in need of roof repairs, siding, soffit-fascia or other exterior problems.

Layers of felt paper and liquid tar can last a long time. Proper slope towards the drain is crucial or pooling water can lead to leaks that can never be found.

Flashing is causing leaks

If there are trees nearby, cleaning the drain filter regularly can be your first step. If the slope is designed to guide water into the eavestrough, regular cleaning is very important. Noticing air pockets (blisters) is an indication of a leak. Blisters must be cut out and sealed with plastic cement. Leaks around the drain are the most common issues with flat roofs. Sealing around the drain with plastic cement can be an option diy project.

Leaking Around the drain

Skylight flashing and exhaust vents can be problematic also. Inspecting for cracks and sealing it with plastic cement can stop the leaks. Always tie your ladder when climbing height. A professional roofing contractor is only a phone call away.

Tar has cooked up over the years

There is a small % of roofing contractors who know how to install or repair flat roofing systems in Ottawa Ontario.

Homes built around the 1980s or prior years had tar and gravel roofing systems. Back then, it was the most popular roofing systems and it was affordable. 40 years later, these roofs need to be restored to new technology systems. New roofing systems like Modified Bitumen torchon roofs are a RedSeal specialty.

FIRE PROTECTION (PROBOARD)

Finding a leak on a tar and gravel roof can be not only challenging, also it can be costly for the homeowners. In my personal experience, I always recommend for a new roof instead of trying to bandaid and old system.

180FF BASE MEMBRANE

In order to install a new roof, gravel needs to be removed off the roof, tar needs to be removed completely, and all the flashing needs to be removed. Once we are down to the bare wood deck, slope can be adjusted according to drainage that already exists and/or address the slope to prevent water pooling on the roof.

250 CAP MEMBRANE

If the slope is good, the roof deck is in good shape, and fire protection will be the first item to installed, followed by the 180ff base membrane starting from the drain of course. 180ff membrane will be folded down onto the side walls prior to installing dripedge starter metal flashing. Once the dripedge is installed and fastened with nails, everything has to be spray primed (manufacturer recommended ) for a superior seal. The next step is to install a strip of 180ff membrane on the flashing to seal the nails and flashing to the field. Now, we are ready for the Torch 250cap membrane starting from the drain.

We only use white color membrane to maximize energy efficiency and regulate the temperature inside house as well as extend the life of the roof.
